LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS (The Mary. M. Fraijo Scholarships):

The Mary M. Fraijo Scholarships for Accounting, Business, & Finance Majors are local scholarships awarded by the Spokane Chapter of the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance. Local scholarships are awarded to students with a primary residence in the Spokane Area, Inland Northwest (Washington and Idaho). Our local chapter will be awarding two types of scholarships for the upcoming academic year. These scholarships are designed to assist either women or men in accounting.

We are nondiscriminatory. The criteria for these accounting scholarships is based on the following:

  • Students enrolling in a four-year college who:
    • Shall be either a part-time or full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting, finance, economics or an equivalent designated post-baccalaureate Certificate of Accounting;
    • Shall have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours with a declared accounting, finance, or economics major;
  • Students enrolled in a formal two-year accounting program through a community college, a junior college or an accredited trade school. These students:
    • Must have completed the first year of the accounting program.
    • Shall be attending an accredited college, university or professional school of accounting;
    • And need not be a member of the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance.

If you are interested and qualify as a resident of the Spokane/Inland Northwest Region, and you are applying for a local scholarship, please complete the application form (see below) and return it along with a copy of your most current college transcript(s) (unofficial transcripts are acceptable), financial aid transcript (if available), personal essay, and two letters of reference, if available, to:

Local Scholarship Deadline – April 30, 2019

If possible, all applications should be typed. Only completed applications with all attachments will be considered for a scholarship award. All information is held in strict confidence. Successful local applicants will be notified of the award by June 15, 2019.

AFWA NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS (click here to access National Scholarship Information)
The mission of the Foundation is to promote and advance education, career development and leadership in finance and accounting, with the goal of guiding women to achieve success in their careers. We believe that to decrease barriers for women in the accounting and financial profession, education and access to career development resources are essential. The Foundation aims to ensure women will have the tools and resources to achieve every career success they desire.

UNDERGRADUATE AND MASTERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE STUDENTS. Local Applications Deadline – April 30, 2019 AND National Applications due April 1, 2019.

The following scholarships are open to the public. Although membership in AFWA is not required, an endorsement by a member or Chapter of AFWA may increase chances of earning a scholarship (download endorsement form)

  • Undergraduate Scholarships – download  local applicationTo support the costs of attending 3rd, 4th, or 5th year when pursuing an accounting or finance degree.   Deadline: April 1, 2019.
  • Master’s Scholarships – download local applicationFor those attending an accredited College or University enrolled in a master’s program, and is pursuing an accounting or finance degree. Deadline: April 1, 2019.


  • Mary Feeney Bonowitz PhD Scholarship – download application: To cover the cost of research for a student seeking a PhD degree in accounting. Deadline: April 1, 2019.
  • Certification Review Course Scholarships – download applicationTo provide registration certification review courses offered by AFWA’s partners Wiley and Surgent. Available review courses include:
    • Surgent CPA, EA, CMA, CIA, CISA Exam Prep
  • Disaster Relief Dues Reimbursement – download application To assist dedicated AFWA Members with the expense of National and Chapter Membership Dues who have experienced personal hardship due to a Natural Disaster in their home town (ex. hurricanes, wild fires, tornadoes).
  • National Dues Reimbursement for Unemployed Members – download applicationTo assist dedicated AFWA Members with the expense of National Membership Dues who are unemployed at the time of their membership renewal.
    • Applicants must have been a member of AFWA for a minimum of five consecutive years and actively involved with either local or national leadership
